Attaining just and lasting peace, especially in Muslim Mindanao, has been one of the main goals of the Aquino administration. In particular, the latter has been working on the enactment of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) which, among other provisions, is providing for the replacement of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with a new autonomous political entity.However, the Mamasapano incident has raised critical questions over efforts to pass the BBL, with a little more than a year before the end of the administration’s term.The incident in Mamasapano, Maguindanao had killed almost 70 people (police commandos, MILF rebels, and civilians).Amid the sentiments and thoughts on the Mamasapano incident and continuing concerns over the BBL’s future, GPH Peace Panel Chair Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer will talk on “The Mamasapano question and its implications and challenges to peace in the Bangsamoro.” Prof. Ferrer will discuss the effects to attaining peace in the Bangsamoro region by the January 25 incident. This event will be held on February 26, Thursday from 1 to 3:30 pm at the ERP Room, L/G Floor Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Quezon City. It is organized by the UP-Center for Integrative and Development Studies and the UP Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs.To be invited to the event are members of UP’s academic community, individuals from other universities, representatives of civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-government organizations (NGOs). It is hoped that through this event, UP may have a venue to express opinions on the matter.
