UP Visayas, Iloilo City Government partner for “batchoy project”
The University of the Philippines (UP) partnered with the local government of Iloilo City to explore gastronomic culture through the study of batchoy.
Batchoy is a famous Filipino noodle soup with rich chicken stock, beef loin, and pork bones, meat, and offal.
The project, “Namit Gid!: A Multistakeholders’ Collaboration for Ilonggo’s Batchoy,” was formalized through the ceremonial Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing with Iloilo City on 3 September 2024, at the City Mayor’s Office, Iloilo City Hall. The “Batchoy Project” is under the Panay Weaving and Culinary Heritage Program.
To further promote and shape the city’s booming gastronomic identity, the partnership will focus on the history and cultural significance of the “batchoy” in the Philippines.
The project also aims to assess the perceived capacity enhancement needs of batchoy businesses, as well as develop the value chain practices and resource management for batchoy production.
Mayor Jerry Treñas signed on behalf of the Iloilo City local government unit (LGU).
UP was represented by UP Visayas (UPV) Chancellor Clement C. Camposano; UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS) Executive Director Dr. Rosalie Arcala Hall; and UPV Center for West Visayan Studies (CWVS) Director Asst. Prof. Frances Anthea Redison.
The MOA Signing was facilitated by MICE Director Ms. Lea Victoria Lara and Atty. Reinhart Pahila from the Mayor’s Office.
Representatives from UPV were also present in the event, including Dr. Mary Rose Rebueño, Batchoy Project Leader; Ms. Febrey Esclares, Senior Office Assistant; and Ms. Aprille Danilly Guintibano, Junior Admin.
