Public Lecture • The Prospects for Renewable Energy: Lessons for the Philippines from Germany’s Energy Transition

The Department of Sociology of University of the Philippines Diliman and the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) Program on Alternative Development invite you to “The Prospects for Renewable Energy: Lessons for the Philippines from Germany’s Energy Transition,” a public lecture by Paul Bertheau (Reiner Lemoine Institute, Berlin, Germany) happening on 20 March 2019 (Wednesday), 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM, at the UP CIDS Conference Hall, Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman.

The Lecture

Mr. Bertheau’s lecture will discuss a short history of the energy transition in Germany and its prospects for small islands in the Philippines.
Germany’s Energiewende (Energy Transition) was not a sudden political decision or idea. It is rooted in the social movements of the 1970s, in particular the anti-nuclear movement that involved very different societal groups. Certain events like the nuclear meltdowns in Chernobyl, Ukraine and Fukushima, Japan had strong impacts on German renewable energy development. Although more than 38.2% of electricity in 2018 was generated from renewable energy such as Sun, Wind and Hydro the objectives of the Energiewende are far from achieved yet. The talk will highlight the objectives achieved and the challenges that lay ahead including how to advance towards carbon neutral energy supply.
The Philippines’ objective is to achieve 100% energy access in 2022, which implies achieving the seventh of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which calls for affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy supply for all. The challenge is to realize such power supply in the very far and remote areas of the country. The talk will highlight some initial findings of the author’s Ph.D. research and a broader discussion about the prospects for renewable energy in the Philippines.
