Abstract

Many global, regional and local issues are urgent and complex. Examples include anthropogenic climate change, disaster risk reduction, protected areas management and biodiversity conservation, microplastic pollution, COVID-19, and Artificial Intelligence. Each issue requires substantial scientific information, but often the information is tentative, and tinged with a degree of uncertainty.

How then can and should scientists and policy makers proceed? How can they guide policy, and bring in all stakeholders to contribute their information and come to a consensus for a policy decision?

This webinar presents the principles of Postnormal Science Framework, which is applied when urgent decisions on policy issues have to be made when [scientific] facts are uncertain, values in dispute, and stakes are high. Seeking to improve the utility of scientific research outputs that lead to policy formulation, the framework is promoted by the International Science Council (ISC) and the International Network for Governmental Science Advice (INGSA).

Workshop

Individuals can express interest to join a free afternoon workshop from 1–5 pm on 29 June 2024. It will examine a case study from the INGSA as an application of the principles learned. But because of the necessarily limited number of slots to facilitate the workshop, not everyone can be accommodated. Thank you for your understanding.

Workshop participants will be contacted directly by the Conservation and Biodiversity Program, and will be given a separate registration form, and/or a different Zoom meeting link.
