GIUGKAT (Ravaged): The Tampakan People’s Struggle Against Open-Pit Mining | Forum and Video Documentary Launch
Everyone is invited to a hybrid forum and documentary launch, titled “GIUGKAT (Ravaged): The Tampakan People’s Struggle Against Open-pit Mining” on 22 March 2024, 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. (PH Standard Time), at the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS), Lower Ground Floor, Ang Bahay ng Alumni, Magsaysay Ave., University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. The forum will also be available via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is first-come, first-served.

The Forum
The forum will discuss, and launch a video documentary on, the resistance of the people in Tampakan, South Cotabato, SOCCSKSARGEN region against Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI), It will:

- Explore possible legal remedies and prospective legislative measures to stop the Tampakan Copper-Gold Mining Operation and prevent the devastating consequences once the project becomes operational.

- Feature representatives from the local communities who stand to be affected by the project, including a farmer, a scientist, and a member of the church.

- Provide an update on the struggle of the people in Tampakan to date against SMI, which is set to be operational in 2026.
The video documentation endeavors to bring to light the ongoing devastation to the environment and the people’s livelihood by mining companies—a business largely facilitated by the Mining Act of 1995. Read backgrounder.
