COVID-19 and Islamic Burials: Safeguarding the Dignity of the Dead

As the number of deaths associated with COVID-19 continues to increase around the world and in the Philippines, Muslim communities, bereaved families, health and death-care professionals, and religious leaders are faced with the challenge of having to adapt protocols and procedures for the management of the dead, while, at the same time, ensuring their dignity and respect through established rites and rituals.

Under Islamic law, as in other cultures and religions, the management of dead bodies is the object of specific rules and practices. But how are current protocols on managing the dead reconciled with religious prescriptions?

The Islamic Studies Program (ISP) of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS), in partnership with the UP Institute of Islamic Studies (UP IIS), the Ministry of Health of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is organizing the webinar “COVID-19 and Islamic Burials: Safeguarding the Dignity of the Dead” to discuss this subject.

The webinar will be conducted on June 17, 2020 (Wednesday), from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NN. Participants in this webinar will include high-level policymakers from the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), the BARMM Ministry of Health, provincial representatives from the BARMM, young Moro professionals, and Ulamas working directly on the management of dead.
