Dr. Iris Thiele Isip-Tan, convenor of UP CIDS’ Program on Health Systems Development, was a speaker at the Forum on Harnessing AI for Health Equity, held on 25–26 March 2026 at the ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines. The forum was convened by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific. Funded through the High-Level Technology Fund with support from the Government of Japan, the Republic of Korea, e-Asia, and the Knowledge Partnership Fund, the forum posed an important question regarding the role of Artificial Intelligence in closing health gaps.
Dr. Isip-Tan’s presentation titled, “AI-ready Without the Foundation: The Medical Education Dilemma” gives an overview of integrating AI into medical education, focusing on challenges, opportunities, and the need for strong digital readiness and equity. In this presentation, she delves into the medical education dilemma, i.e. that we lack the foundation for the AI-integrated practice and how we ought to traverse it .
